Temeraire and Iskierka eventually decide that they will have to steal the egg and leave behind their Captains until they can get the egg to safety. Tharkay has a bit more freedom to visit them and suggest that they may have to take care of everything on their own. Temeraire and Iskierka are allowed to see their egg and discovered it was being well cared for, but they didn’t want to leave it in the hands of Napoleon and Lein.Įventually their Captains and Tharkay arrive and Fontainebleau, but they are only allowed to see Laurence and Granby briefly. The two dragons are separated from the humans and taken directly to Palace of Fontainebleau where the grounds have been completely altered to make a comfortable resident for many dragons. But it turns out to be an elaborate trap that succeeds and they are all imprisoned. They continue to search together now, in tell they spy a French dragon winging through the mountains and follow it.
She had also heard about the egg being stolen and that Lein plans on destroying it. Once again, they set out and while searching through the Alps for the Dragons transporting the egg, they encounter Iskierka and Granby. Tharkay has word that the egg is on its way to France, so he and Temeraire return to Laurence. Tharkay arrives just in time to save Temeraire from serious injury or death while he sleeps. During the journey, Temeraire discovers just what length the Russian peasants are going to, to trap and kill any Dragon that comes in their area. Because of Laurence’s injury resulting from a duel, Temeraire sets out alone for the long journey overland. While mopping up in Russia’s winter, they receive word that Temeraire and Iskierka’s egg has been stolen from China.
